Tulsa Athletic Travel to Miami for South Region Final on Saturday

MIAMI – Tulsa Athletic travel to Miami FC for the South Region finals set for Saturday (July 20) at 6 p.m. (CT) at Buccaneer Field at Barry University. The winner of the contest advances to the NPSL National Semifinals.

 

Tulsa Athletic defeated Fort Worth Vaqueros, 3-1, on Tuesday (July 16) at Veterans Park in the regional semifinals to clinch a spot in the South Region finals. After allowing an early goal by the visiting Vaqueros, Tulsa evened the score at 1-1 in the first half on a goal by Joe Garcia. The green and yellow dominated the second half and tallied the game-winning goal late when Aaron Ugbah scored in 84th minute for a 2-1 edge. Junior Kazeem added an insurance goal for the 3-1 victory.

 

Tulsa is currently on a 13-match unbeaten streak in the 2019 season, including a six-match winning streak. The club went 7-0-3 during the regular season to win the Heartland Conference regular season title by 11 points. Tulsa Athletic started the playoffs with two victories in the Heartland Conference playoffs to capture the conference playoff title and most recently defeated Fort Worth.

 

This is Tulsa’s second appearance in the South Region finals. In the 2014 season, Tulsa Athletic made the regional champion in Chattanooga where they fell, 2-0, to host Chattanooga FC. Tulsa’s all-time record in NPSL postseason play is 8-4-1.  

 

In the postseason run, Garcia has totaled four goals and paces the team in goals during the season with eight total. He has scored in all three postseason victories. Adam Habib adds five goals this season. Goalkeeper Bryson Reed has four shutouts during the 2019 campaign and allows less than one goal per game.

 

Miami FC, the 2018 NPSL champion, went 9-1 during the 2019 regular season to capture the Sunshine Conference championship. Miami is on an 11-match winning streak after three straight playoff victories. In the postseason, Miami FC has defeated Jacksonville Armada (4-0), Miami United (3-2) and Chattanooga FC (2-0) all at home.

 

During the regular season, Miguel Gonzalez led Miami with 13 goals, ranking third in the league. Dario Suarez posted nine goals, and Mohamed Thiaw added eight goals.

 

This is the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, and Tulsa’s first-ever contest in Florida.

 

The winner of Saturday’s contest will advance to the 2019 NPSL National semifinals set for July 27.
