TULSA – FC Tulsa earned a late penalty in the 84th minute, which they converted, as the visitors won, 1-0 over Tulsa Athletic on Tuesday (March 18) in the First Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Athletic Community Field at Hicks Park.
Windy conditions played a part in the contest with 20 mph winds and wind gusts of up to 40 mph. Tulsa Athletic played into the wind for the first half and had the wind at their back in the second half.
Taylor Calheira of FC Tulsa scored on the penalty in the 84th after a handball in the box.
Tulsa Athletic played the final 24 minutes down to 10 after Gustavo Vargas was set off after receiving his second caution in the 66th minute. He received his first caution in the first half.
A few minutes earlier in the 60th minute, the green and yellow had their best opportunity of the game when Luis Flores hit a corner kick that he tried to curl into the goal with the aid of the wind, but FC Tulsa’s goalkeeper tipped it off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Flores had another chance on a free kick in the 77th minute that caused FC Tulsa’s goalkeeper to make another save.
For the contest, Tulsa Athletic total five shots on goal.
Jakub Grzesiak started in goal and went the full 90 minutes, totaling seven saves in his first appearance in the green and yellow.
Tulsa Athletic now prepares for their 2025 season in The League for Clubs, which is set to start in May. The schedule is set to be released in the coming weeks.
