TULSA – Tulsa Athletic plays host to OKC 1889 FC in the home opener for the 2021 season on Sunday (May 16) at 2 p.m. at Veterans Park in a critical early season clash.
Tulsa Athletic and OKC 1889 FC are currently tied at the top of the table in the Heartland Conference after the first two weeks of the season with each team at four points. Arkansas Wolves and Reign FK sit in third with one point each. Heartland Conference members Demize NPSL and Dallas City FC open the season this weekend.
The green and yellow picked up their first win of the season on Saturday with a 2-0 victory at Reign FK in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Joe Garcia tallied both goals for the brace as Tulsa Athletic pulled away late for the win. The season started with a 3-3 draw at Arkansas Wolves for the green and yellow. Garcia, Alex Harris and Aboubakr Diallo totaled the goals in the season-opening contest.
Garcia currently leads the club with three goals on the season after being the leading scoring for Tulsa in the 2019 season with eight goals in 14 games. In his four years with the club, Garcia has registered 21 goals, twice leading the club in scoring in a season (2019, 2017).
OKC 1889 won 5-0 in its most recent contest against Arkansas Wolves in Chickasha, Oklahoma on Saturday. OKC posted two first-half goals and poured on three late tallies, including two by Callum Shephard, in the 5-0 victory. OKC 1889 began the season with a 1-1 draw at Reign FK in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
This is the first-ever meeting between the two clubs in NPSL action. The two clubs have history as they played home and home friendlies in the 2017 season.
The pregame tailgate begins at 12:30 p.m. at Veterans Park with the game scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
