TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa Athletic faces FC Tulsa for the first time ever on Tuesday (April 5) at 7:30 p.m. at ONEOK Field in the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Video streaming of the match is available on ESPN+.
Tulsa Athletic advanced to the second round by defeating Azteca FC (Colo.) by the score of 3-0 on March 23 at Case Soccer Complex. Aaron Ugbah scored the match-winning goal in the 25th minute and Joe Garcia doubled the advantage with a penalty kick goal in the 72nd minute. Ruben Torres added the final goal in the 75th minute for the 3-0 score. Goalkeeper Bryson Reed made three saves for the shutout victory.
The green and yellow held a 18-6 advantage in shots and 6-3 edge in shots on target.
Tulsa Athletic earned a berth in the US Open Cup by advancing to the NPSL National Championship in 2021 where the green and yellow finished as the NPSL National runner up.
In their 2021 season, Tulsa Athletic won the South Region championship for the first time in club history and captured the Heartland Conference crown for the second straight season. Tulsa Athletic has won their conference championship five times in nine NPSL seasons dating back to 2013.
During the 2021 season, Garcia led the club in scoring with 10 goals. Aboubakr Diallo added six goals, and Juan Arias Alvarez totaled four goals. Garcia, the Tulsa Athletic captain, has totaled 31 goals in five seasons with the club, including one in the US Open Cup.
FC Tulsa is five matches into their 2022 USL Championship season where they are 3-2 overall, including 3-0 at ONEOK Field. Rodrigo da Costa and JJ Williams pace FCT in goals with two each. Sean Lewis has 10 saves and one shutout in the five contests.
FCT is currently on a three-match losing streak in the US Open Cup. In their last appearance in 2019, then the Tulsa Roughnecks lost 2-0 to Austin Bold in the second round. Tulsa Roughnecks fell 4-3 to former Tulsa Athletic NPSL rival FC Wichita in 2018 at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium in the second round. Tulsa Roughnecks advanced to the fourth round in 2017 before falling 2-1 to MLS side FC Dallas. FCT all-time has two wins, four losses and advanced one on penalties in the US Open Cup.
Tulsa Athletic’s 3-0 win over Azteca FC in the first round is their first-ever US Open Cup win in four matches.

The winner of the Tulsa Derby advances to the third round of the US Open Cup. The draw for that round is scheduled for April 8 with matches set to be played from April 19-21.
